Le concept
Resilience (Sumud) is the deeply Palestinian art of remaining — not merely surviving, but continuing to exist with full presence, full dignity, and full identity in the face of forces designed to erase you. It is the olive tree that grows from stone, the embroiderer who stitches through grief, the village that rebuilds itself generation after generation. Sumud is not passive endurance; it is active, rooted, and radically present.
Le motif
The Bethlehem Star and Sumud share the same secret: both begin from a center that cannot be approached from the outside. The star earns its form by radiating outward from a hidden kernel of precision — just as Palestinian resilience radiates outward from an interior place of rootedness that no external force has ever reached. Bethlehem women embroidered this star onto wedding garments: the beginning of a new life, stitched in the geometry of what endures.

Comment le colorier
Start at the very center
Fill the small central square first — this is your anchor. Everything radiates from here.
Work the 8 triangles outward
Fill each triangle one at a time, moving in one direction around the star. Do not skip any.
Add the inner ring
The ring that connects all 8 triangle tips — use your second color here.
Fill the corner stars
Each corner holds a smaller version of the main star. Follow the same sequence.
Complete the outer border
The double border line frames the full composition — finish here.

Signification culturelle
The Bethlehem Star (Najmat Bayt Lahm) is documented in thobes held in the British Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution. It appears in its most elaborate form in the Qabbeh — the ceremonial chest panel — of Bethlehem wedding thobes dating to the early 19th century. Bethlehem (Bayt Lahm, House of Meat/Bread) has been continuously inhabited for over three thousand years, and its embroidery tradition is among the most technically demanding in Palestine.
Bethlehem Tatreez is distinguished by its precise radial symmetry and its use of silk thread on linen — materials that required significant investment and signaled the family's commitment to quality. The eight-pointed star in Islamic geometric tradition represents the eight directions of space, the completeness of orientation. In Tatreez it lost formal religious meaning and became instead the primary symbol of Bethlehem civic identity.
The strict 45-degree angle requirement of the Bethlehem Star means that the embroiderer must count every stitch precisely across the full radial composition. A single miscounted thread shifts the entire star out of alignment. This structural demand is also a cultural demand: Bethlehem's embroidery tradition insists on precision as a form of respect — for the pattern, for the tradition, and for the person who will wear it.
