Le concept

Connection (Tarabut) is the quality of relationship that persists across separation — not the proximity of physical presence but the ongoing reality of mutual implication. Two people who have never met can be connected: their lives shaped by the same history, the same land, the same story.

الترابط هو جودة العلاقة التي تستمر عبر الانفصال. يمكن لشخصين لم يلتقيا قط أن يكونا مترابطين: حياتهما تشكّلت بنفس التاريخ ونفس الأرض.

Le motif

Dessin au trait du motif Jewel Knot

Jewel Knot places a center circle — the source — and connects it by lines to eight satellite circles, each one in turn reaching toward an outer ring. Tarabut is this: not proximity but connection, not the fact of being near but the fact of being linked. Gaza has always been a networked city — its connections reaching across the Mediterranean and the trade routes of the Levant. The jewels in the knot are the communities reached; the lines between them are the relationships maintained.

Comment le colorier

  1. Begin at the center circle

Fill the central circle — your primary gold.

  2. Work the connecting lines outward

The lines extending from center to each satellite circle — thin and precise.

  3. Fill each of the 8 satellite circles

Each mid-ring circle — your secondary silver or pearl color.

  4. Add the outer ring circles

The 8 smaller outer circles — lighter version of the center color.

  5. Complete the outer boundary rings

The two concentric rings that contain the full composition.

Signification culturelle

The Jewel Knot (Uqdat al-Jawahir) is documented as a Gaza regional motif. Gaza's coastal position made it a center of Mediterranean trade for millennia — the physical jewels, beads, and ornamental objects that passed through Gaza's port were translated into the language of embroidery by Gaza's women. The embroidered jewel is the permanent version of the traded jewel.

Gaza (Ghazza) is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world — its archaeological record extends back over five thousand years. Its position as the southernmost port city of the Levantine coast made it the primary gateway between the Mediterranean world and the Arabian Peninsula, between Africa and Asia. Gaza's embroidery tradition reflects this position: it is the most cosmopolitan of Palestinian regional Tatreez.

Contemporary Gaza embroiderers, working under conditions of siege and blockade since 2007, have continued to produce and innovate in Tatreez with remarkable creative force. The Jewel Knot motif — about connection maintained across distance — has taken on additional meaning in this context. The circles connected by lines are the communities and individuals that Gaza's embroiderers continue to reach across the physical barriers of the blockade.
