Le concept
Optimism (Tafaaul) comes from the root fa'ala — to augur well, to take as a good omen. Palestinian optimism is the practice of choosing to act as if things will go well — because the alternative is to stop acting. The sun rises every morning regardless of what the night contained.
التفاؤل يأتي من الجذر فأل — التيمن والاستبشار. التفاؤل الفلسطيني هو ممارسة اختيار التصرف كما لو أن الأمور ستسير على ما يرام.
Le motif
The Rising Sun shows only its upper half — the first emergence, the beginning before the full day is certain. Tafaaul is this specific moment: not the noon sun overhead but the sunrise, the optimism of the half-seen, the choice to face the morning before it has proven itself. The alternating long and short rays hold both the certain hope and the tentative one — optimism acknowledges uncertainty without being diminished by it.

Signification culturelle
The Rising Sun (Shurq al-Shams) is a pan-Palestinian solar motif documented from multiple regions. The solar symbol in Palestinian Tatreez predates Islam — it connects to ancient Levantine sun worship and to the agricultural civilization's dependence on solar cycles for the timing of planting, harvest, and animal husbandry. The embroidered sun is both cosmological symbol and agricultural calendar.
The specific form of the Rising Sun — showing only the upper half of the sun, with alternating long and short rays — encodes the moment of sunrise with precision. Not the full disk overhead, not the setting sun, but the specific first emergence above the horizon: the moment of maximum optimism, when the day is all potential and nothing yet decided. Palestinian Tatreez chose this specific moment for the pattern of Tafaaul.
Solar imagery in Palestinian Tatreez appears most prominently in the Bethlehem, Ramallah, and Hebron regional traditions, and the color palette of each regional version reflects the specific quality of that region's light. The Bethlehem sun is worked in the warm amber of limestone at sunrise; the Hebron sun in the deeper golds of the highland plateau; the Ramallah sun in the clear bright reds of the mountain morning.
