Le concept
Compassion (Rahma) comes from the root rahima — the womb, the deep instinctive care from the most intimate connection. Allah is al-Rahman, al-Rahim — from the same root. Rahma is the fierce, protective, generative love of a parent for a child — the thread that transforms collection into community.
الرحمة من الجذر رحم — العناية الغريزية العميقة. الله الرحمن الرحيم من نفس الجذر. الرحمة هي الخيط الذي يحوّل المجموعة إلى مجتمع.
Le motif
Twelve small circles form a ring around the center, each connected to the next by a thin thread. Rahma is the thread between the pearls — invisible unless you look for it, essential to the integrity of the whole. Each pearl is precious in itself; the thread is what makes them a necklace. Remove the thread and you have twelve separate beautiful things. Keep the thread and you have something that can be worn, given, inherited. This is compassion: the thread that transforms collection into community.

Signification culturelle
The Pearl Knot (Uqdat al-Lu'lu') is documented as a Gaza regional motif. Gaza's coastal trade position made it a center of the pearl and jewelry trade in the medieval period — the pearl-diving trade of the Persian Gulf sent its goods northward through the Red Sea to Egypt and then along the coast to Gaza, where they entered the Levantine market. Physical pearl necklaces were the primary form of wearable wealth across Palestinian society.
The physical necklace (qilada) in Palestinian material culture was the most visible form of family wealth — gold and silver necklaces were the main store of portable value for Palestinian families, the property that could be converted to cash in times of necessity, that was given to daughters at marriage as their economic foundation. The embroidered necklace in Tatreez carries this economic significance into the decorative language.
The twelve circles of the Pearl Knot arranged in a ring create a visual community: each pearl equidistant from the center, each connected to both its neighbors, none more important than another. This compositional logic encodes the structure of Palestinian social life in its best form: a community of equals, each connected to the next, held together by a shared center.
